Discover The Many Reasons Why To Stop Smoking

Why to stop smoking is something people have increasingly considered since the days following the end of the war, during which virtually everyone smoked. Looking back, it seems impossible to believe that a habit such as smoking could ever have become so popular, but it just illustrates how much influence advertising, the media, and social pressure can exert upon people. It is surprising also that the numbers of people still smoking are as high as they are, now that research has conclusively proven just how dangerous the habit is likely to be.

Anyone looking for reasons to stop smoking only has to look at the statistics concerning the survival rates of smokers from a significant number of degenerative diseases. Lung cancer is known as the most prevalent cause of death in smokers, and it is scarcely surprising when you consider exactly where the toxic substances are inhaled. It is tempting to concentrate upon the tar and nicotine which are essential to the manufacture of tobacco products, but these are by no means the only toxic substances which are found in modern cigarettes. When you consider how often these chemicals come in to contact with the sensitive areas of the lung, it is surprising that death rates are not even higher than they are.

This would be a strong enough reason not to smoke were it the only disease from which smokers can die, but in reality it is far from that. Heart disease is also an epidemic in Western society, and smoking is a considerable risk factor along with excess saturated fat and a sedentary lifestyle. A heart attack can be instantly fatal, unlike even cancer, although there are many who survive. Those which do will have to live the rest of their lives in the knowledge that future attacks are likely to be more severe, and that there is no way to eliminate the risk.

Smoking Cessation

Many who are contemptuous of the reasons why to stop smoking point to the fact that anyone can be run over by a bus tomorrow, and that the increased death risk is not a reason to give up something which gives the much pleasure. Only they know how much pleasure the habit does truly give them, but the risk of death is far from being the only reason to stop smoking. Even those who do not die prematurely are often subject to a greatly reduced lifestyle as a result of smoking. This can involve breathing difficulties, reduced mobility, and even the need for amputations or organ removal.

One of the commonly ignored reasons to stop smoking is one which affects absolutely everyone who indulges in this habit, and that is the amount of money which is spent. Because a pack of cigarettes is relatively cheap to buy, people often do not consider the accumulative effect of this spending over many months and years. Of course, there is also an element of not wanting to know and not wanting to face the truth which keeps people from doing the calculations, and this is best overcome by doing them anyway and thinking of the alternative uses to which the money could have been put.

Other reasons why to stop smoking have sprung up in recent years as the environment for smokers has become increasingly hostile. It was common once for people to smoke at work, and virtually everyone who smoked would do so in a public house with a drink in a social gathering. Now, in many jurisdictions, it is no longer even legal to smoke in public places, and smoking at work is often confined to places outside the building. Social intolerance of smokers has simply added to the already present reasons why to stop smoking.
